তুলিতে কতটা জল থাকবে, আর কাগজ কতটা ভিজে থাকবে তার পরিমাণ ঠিক করবে শিল্পী। স্বচ্ছ জলরঙের এটাই শর্ত। অস্বচ্ছ জলরং-এ কাগজ ভেজানোর দরকার পরেনা। অবশ্য এর ব্যতিক্রমও আছে। কিছু ক্ষেত্রে একজন শিল্পী নিজ দক্ষতায় নতুন শৈলী উদ্ভাবনও করেন। জল রং-কে নানা ভাবে ব্যবহার করা যায়। শিল্পী ভেদে জলরং-এর বিচিত্র ব্যবহার শিল্প-প্রেমীদের আনন্দ দেয়।
